Advertisers want to understand the inventory they buy. Publishers want buyers to recognise their authorised sales relationships. Both sides benefit when the path between a website and an advertising buyer can be explained clearly.
Know what the transparency files describe
ads.txt lets a publisher publicly identify authorised sellers of its digital inventory. The corresponding app-ads.txt initiative addresses app inventory. sellers.json is published by advertising systems to identify sellers. The SupplyChain object carries information about the entities involved in a bid request’s supply path.
These mechanisms serve different roles and are intended to work together. They are not interchangeable badges. Their presence does not, by itself, prove that a visit is human, that a placement meets an advertiser’s suitability requirements or that a campaign will perform.
For publishers: maintain an accurate list
Ask each monetization partner for the exact entries needed for your relationship and an explanation of the account identifier. Confirm whether the relationship is direct or involves resale; do not guess from a partner’s marketing description. Keep a record of who approved each entry and when the relationship began.
Review entries when partnerships change. A long list copied from an unrelated website is difficult to maintain and may not represent your actual setup. Coordinate changes with your partners so that a cleanup does not accidentally interrupt a valid sales relationship.
For advertisers: ask about the buying path
- Which publisher or app is the inventory intended to come from?
- Which seller account and advertising system are involved?
- Can the partner explain its role and any intermediaries?
- How are authorisation and supply-chain information checked?
- What information is available when a placement or traffic-quality issue is investigated?
Evaluate these answers alongside placement reports, suitability controls and outcome quality. A shorter path may be easier to explain, but the number of intermediaries alone is not a complete measure of value or quality. Service, access and commercial terms also matter.
Agree how discrepancies will be handled
Before a campaign scales, agree the reporting timezone, the meaning of an impression and the procedure for disputed traffic. Document who can investigate and what evidence can be shared without exposing unnecessary personal information. Keep business and technical contacts current.
Make transparency an ongoing routine
Schedule a review after a partner change, a new inventory source or an unexplained reporting discrepancy. Preserve the relevant identifiers and dates so that a later investigation has a clear starting point.
The useful outcome is not simply a file that exists. It is a set of sales relationships that both sides can explain, maintain and investigate when something changes.
