A campaign can deliver inexpensive clicks and still be an expensive way to find customers. Before comparing traffic sources, decide what a useful result looks like for your business and how you will recognise it after the click.

Start with an outcome you can verify

For an online shop, the outcome might be a completed order that survives cancellation and refund checks. For a B2B business, it might be a lead accepted by the sales team. A page view, a form submission and a qualified opportunity are different events. Report them separately rather than treating every action as equally valuable.

Ask the person responsible for sales or fulfilment to help define the event. If advertising reports count leads that the sales team cannot contact, the measurement system is rewarding the wrong behaviour.

Build a small, useful scorecard

  • Cost per qualified outcome: advertising spend divided by the number of outcomes that meet your definition.
  • Conversion rate: qualified outcomes divided by the relevant visits or clicks. State which denominator you use.
  • Conversion value: the business value assigned to the outcomes, using a consistent method.
  • ROAS: attributed revenue divided by advertising spend. This measures revenue against media spend; it does not deduct product costs or operating expenses.

Keep impressions, CPM and CPC as diagnostic measures. They help explain changes, but they are not a substitute for evaluating the customers or opportunities generated.

Compare sources on the same basis

Use the same reporting dates, currency, conversion definition and attribution window when comparing partners. Check whether purchases are counted once or every time an event fires. Separate click-based and view-based attribution where your reporting permits it. Differences between systems should be investigated before budgets are moved.

For example, imagine two sources each receive a €1,000 test budget. One generates 100 enquiries, of which five qualify. The other generates 40 enquiries, of which eight qualify. Their costs per qualified enquiry are €200 and €125 respectively. These are illustrative figures, not a prediction of campaign results.

Choose a next action, not just a winner

If a source produces many visits but few meaningful actions, inspect the placement, audience and landing page together. If results are strong but volume is low, test a controlled expansion. Keep a record of the decision and the metric that will determine whether to continue.

Before your next campaign review, replace one vanity metric with one verified business outcome. That change makes the discussion about the quality of demand rather than the lowest price for a click.
